How much does a funeral officiant cost in Ontario?

Funeral officiants and celebrants in Ontario charge about $300 to $800 in 2026. What the fee covers, how clergy honorariums work, and who pays it.

By Luanne Wilbur, licensed wedding & funeral officiant

When someone dies, the cost of the person who leads the service is rarely the first thing a family thinks about, and it is usually one of the smaller lines on the bill. Here is what officiants and celebrants charge in Ontario, what the fee should cover, and how it is paid.

The short answer

In 2026, independent funeral celebrants in Ontario publish fees from about $300 to $800 for a funeral, memorial or celebration of life. Most sit between $300 and $500; the higher fees usually include several family meetings and a full eulogy written by the celebrant.

  • Independent celebrants: $300 on two published price lists in the Niagara Region, $400 to $600 around Ottawa, $500 for a Toronto group of officiants, and $700 to $800 for celebrants who write the whole eulogy.
  • A celebrant booked through the funeral home: one Hamilton funeral home lists its own celebrant at $395.
  • Clergy: churches often charge no fee for the service itself but expect an honorarium. A Hamilton Anglican parish names $300 for the presiding clergy and $200 for the musician, and Ontario funeral home price lists show clergy honorariums from about $200 to $450.

What I charge

A celebration of life with me is $300: a planning meeting with the family, a tribute and readings written for the person, a rehearsal with the family and the speakers, and officiating on the day. Travel is free within 25 km of Hamilton, then $0.70 per km past the first 25 km, one way.

I can usually meet a family within a day or two. For a service this week, call or text 289-994-2665 rather than wait for an email.

What the fee should cover

  • At least one meeting or call with the family, to hear about the person.
  • An order of service, shared with you and with the funeral home before the day.
  • The tribute or eulogy, or help for the family members who will speak.
  • Arriving early, holding the timing, introducing each speaker, and stepping in if someone cannot finish.

Ask whether writing the eulogy is included. Some celebrants write it; others host the service and leave the eulogy to the family.

What makes it cost more

  • A graveside committal after a service somewhere else. Some celebrants include it when it follows straight on; others charge it separately, $400 to $500 on published lists.
  • Travel beyond the celebrant's area, usually charged per kilometre.
  • A second location or a second day.
  • Funeral home charges, which are separate from the celebrant's fee. One Hamilton funeral home lists $495 for weekend use of its facilities and staff, $195 per 100 printed folders and $295 for livestreaming.

Who pays the officiant

When there is a funeral home, it often pays the celebrant or the clergy on your behalf and adds the amount to its invoice as a disbursement (sometimes called a cash advance): a payment to someone else, passed on at cost. For a celebration of life held later, without a funeral home, you usually pay the celebrant directly.

Ontario funeral homes must give you their price list before you sign a contract, and post it on their website. The Bereavement Authority of Ontario's consumer guide says the contract should list payments such as honorariums for religious officials.

Clergy, celebrant or funeral director?

  • Clergy lead a religious service, usually in their own church, and an honorarium is customary.
  • A celebrant writes and leads a personal service, religious, spiritual or neither, wherever the family gathers.
  • The funeral home looks after the person who has died: registering the death, the permits, the burial or the cremation. When the body or the ashes are present, the service is usually held at or arranged through a licensed funeral home.

Questions families ask

Is the officiant included in the funeral home's package?

Often not. Several Ontario price lists show the officiant or the clergy as a separate line, "at cost" or "as selected", and some packages leave the officiant out entirely. Ask for the funeral home's price list: they must give you one.

Can a family member lead the service instead?

Yes. Nobody needs a licence to lead a celebration of life, and many families ask a relative to host. A celebrant helps when nobody feels able to hold the room, or when the family wants someone to write the tribute.

How quickly can a celebrant be arranged?

Usually within days. If you are planning a service this week, here is how a celebration of life works with me, or simply call.

Honouring a life, with dignity. The fee is $300, with everything included listed on the page.
